Games Dunk - by Grant Shepherd

Are video games art? PART 2

While there are many games that are groundbreaking and revolutionary, not all games are of the calibre to be classified as art. Three recent games that encompass these qualities are:
1. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
3. Grand Theft Auto IV

There are countless more titles that could be referred to as art, but these three are some of the most recent and demonstrate different artistic qualities.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
This game is one of the most artistic games ever imagined. The reason for this is that it has effectively created an entire fictional world with thousands of different characters and countless missions to partake in. The game is what’s referred to as an RPG or role playing game, where you take the role of a character you create and live out a life in this world.

What sets this game apart from other RPG’s is that Oblivion has created something entirely original and the imagination of the developers is really apparent. Every aspect of a fantasy novel or film has been captured and translated perfectly into a world where you as the gamer can completely immerse yourself into the game and live the life you could never lead.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
This game caused a huge commotion even before its release due to the fact that the gaming community have learnt to expect great things from its creator Hideo Kojima. The expectation for this game can only be rivalled by one other game in history (GTA IV which will be talked about next). This game was so anticipated because of the fact that it is so artistic.Kojima is regarded as one of the most talented video game directors of all time. The reason for this is that he was one of the first video game directors to approach games as if they were films. Big budgets, large crews, cinematic visuals and even orchestral soundtracks. Kojima’s creations have often been referred to as playable films, due to the immense amount of time and effort put into them.

In a time when everyone is obsessed with creating their own characters and choosing how they want to play games, Kojima sticks to traditional formulas and tells the story the way he wants it told. This is what sets this game apart from its competitors. No other game on the market is as well designed and imaginative as Metal Gear Solid. This game is definitely art.

Grand Theft Auto IV
Finally, this game has been referred to as the best game of all time. GTA has completely revolutionised the way we play games. It has truly made everyone consider the way they approach video gaming and even reconsider the medium as an art form.

This game has re-sparked the debate of video games as art, due to the fact that this game is so remarkable. This game has created a real living, breathing city. Everyone has a personality, everyone has a story. GTA has put you smack bang into the middle of an alternate reality that is very reminiscent of our own, but so different. You control the life of a character where every decision you make has a ramification either immediately or later on in the game. For example you have a decision at one point in the game to kill two characters. You have to choose between two people and the decision you make changes the entire game. This is because the character you let live helps you by referring you to his friends for jobs etc, and both characters have a different set of friends. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to revolutionary new aspects of video gaming that GTA has created.

To sum it up GTA has smacked the art critics in the face and told them to accept video gaming once and for all, and it looks like it may have succeeded.

I've only played Oblivion, and I don't know if I'd consider it art. It's certainly trying to achieve some artistic merit, but it falls a little short, I found.
