One of the main aspects to consider when analysing whether something is art, is the way it affects people in society. Until recently if you asked most people whether a video game has had a lasting effect on them, most would have said no. This is because video games have never really been taken seriously and have only been a gimmick used to pass the time. But over the past few years gaming has headed in a new direction, one that has taken a more artistic approach and hence the experience of video games in general has changed for the better.
Games today are epic masterpieces driven by eventful storylines, intriguing characters and imaginative gameplay. This therefore allows the gamer to actually be involved in the games that they play. Much like the cinema, games impact society by engaging the audience and creating not only entertainment but a worthwhile experience. Games ensure this by emotionally investing the gamer in the characters and the world in which they live. The impact can be much greater through the medium of video games (over cinema) due to the fact that you as the gamer are able to control the action. You take on the role of the main character and therefore experience exactly what they go through. Thus ensuring you fully understand the character and the role they play in the narrative, more so than any film can.
