How could you not remember California Games.
This game originated on the Apple II and commodore 64, but then progressed to multiple platforms including: NES, Sega master system and the Amiga (The version i grew up with).
The game consisted of six summer sports: skateboarding, footbag, surfing, roller skating, frisbee and BMX.
All of which required you as the competitor to demonstrate various talents to achieve high scores from the judges.
This game was just a blast to play, all the games were equally exciting and all required a uniquely different style of play.
Memorable moments
One of the coolest things was when you crashed in surfing and the shark started to emerge from the water right next to you. Not to mention when you kicked the footbag over the fence and had to whistle to the next door neighbour to pass it back. Or how disappointed you got when you landed face first on the pavement after trying to rollerskate over sand.
All of these classic moments provided you as the gamer with a fantastic video gaming experience, one that will always live on in our memories.
California Games was a completely unique experience, one that no one had really seen before. And to some extent it is even still unique in todays market, the only games that come close to this are the occasional Olympic release that is brought out every 4 years. But even they dont come any where close to the experience you got from California Games.
The success of this title also opened up the opportunity for a sequel which was released a few years later, but it didn't manage to create the same sort of essence of the original, therefore it didn't gain as much critical success as its predecessor.
California Games will never go down in history as one of the greatest games, but what it has done is create a genuinely authentic, imaginative and unique experience.
