Saints Row 2 review

Saints Row has always been referred to as a GTA rip-off, a mere diversion to keep GTA fans happy while waiting for the next instalment of the Rockstar franchise to come out.
While the original Saints Row was unique in certain aspects, the critics were pretty right in summing up that it copied GTA in every regard. But the Saints Row series has grown up significantly since its last outing and whilst still deriving some aspects from various other open world crime games, it has surged ahead and come up with some surprisingly fun and entertaining pieces of gaming.
Saints Row 2 starts off with you in the hospital waking up from a coma. You were burned horrifically in the original Saints Row so you are found covered in bandages. This is where the fun comes in, you are given an open slate as to how your character looks, talks, fights and even how you walk.
The character customisation is where the original Saints Row succeeded and the sequel only further boosts the available options for the player to make your character completely unique.
Saints 2 is typically what you would expect from your average open world crime game, you are given various missions to take down gang members and drive people around the city etc. It’s pretty much your standard fare. Don’t get me wrong it’s absolutely brilliant to play and of very high quality, but what sets Saints 2 apart from GTAIV is the amount of fun you have while playing.
Whereas GTAIV focussed on gritty realism Saints 2 focuses on insane acts that are full of hilarity and stupidity. For example early on you take control of a sanitation truck and have to spray houses with sewage to lower the property value.
Or how about when you are given the mission of riding around on an ATV with a flame proof suit and driving around blowing stuff up.
You can even be the star of FUZZ, Saints 2 take on the hit show Cops. Where you have to arrest criminals in the most violent and entertaining ways possible.
These are just a handful of the utterly outrageous things you can do on the streets of Still Water. Basically think of all the things you wanted to do in Liberty City and Saints 2 has done it.
Yes the graphics aren’t anywhere as slick as GTA and overall it has some serious flaws and glitches but when it comes down to it Saints Row 2 is a brilliant game that shouldn’t be missed by anyone looking for a hilarious, fun, violent and engrossing experience. Is it better than GTA? In some ways yes, but in others no. Both are beautiful games, it’s just a matter of taste really.
